A couple from Hollins Green celebrated 60 years of marriage with a day at the races and a slap up meal at the Red Lion with family, friends and neighbours.
Clifford and Doreen Herridge both age 81 celebrated their Diamond Wedding with a fun packed day with family members at Haydock Race Course with Clifford even managing a winner or two to help with the celebrations. That was followed a week later with a meal at their local the Red Lion in Hollins Green celebrating with family, friends and neighbours.
The popular couple were married at St Marys Church in Cadishead after both being pupils at Cadishead Secondary Modern School. They first met through dancing at Cadishead Conservative Club and above Irlam Co-op with that Dancing remaining an important part of their life.
Both Doreen and Clifford are trained dance instructors and have been passing on their skills at the Hollins Green Dancing Class at Hollins Green Community Centre for more than 42 years. Doreen said, “Like any couple we have had our ups and downs, you just have to work through it together and our shared passion for dancing has always given us a strong base and bond.”
Clifford did his National Service with the Kings Regiment serving 12 months in Korea, before working on the farms in Rixton and a 20 year spell at the Irlam Steelworks until closure in 1974. In 1982 he joined the Probation Service as a sessional worker until retiring at 65.
Doreen worked at St Marys Church in Cadishead before joining the CWS in Manchester also working at various times for Royle’s and 15 years at the Steelworks in Irlam before working for the Probation Service for 12 years before retiring.
The couple have two sons Stephen and Colin, daughter Shirley, eight grand kids and three great grand kids. Happy Diamond Wedding!
